It’s a sign that indicates the maturity of the Bollywood cinegoer. John Abraham’s ‘Vicky Donor’, a film about the tricky subject of sperm donation is doing extremely well at the box office. The film, starring VJ-turned-actor Ayushmann Khurrana, Annu Kapoor and Yaami Gautam has garnered around Rs 22 crore so far. Leading trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “’Vicky Donor’ collected between Rs 7 cr and Rs 7.5 cr [early estimates] in Wknd 2, taking the 10-day total to Rs 21.5 to Rs 22 cr nett. Hit."
Incidentally, while it was thought that the comedy, set in Delhi, would do well only in multiplexes and big cities, what comes as a pleasant surprise is that it is a hit in smaller centres as well. After receiving positive reviews from the critics, 'Vicky Donor' earned Rs 13.40 crore in the opening weekend. Thereafter, word-of-mouth helped it go from strength to strength.
Critics say that the success of this film gells well with the changing status of Indian cinema. It may prompt filmmakers to go for more experimentation and bring taboo topics on screen.
